As many of you know, a bear (or two) has been sighted in Mars Borough, and the surrounding area. The Game Commission was contacted on 06/26/2018 and an officer visited the Mars Borough and spoke with several people, including a Borough Police Officer. To date, the bear has not appeared to be aggressive, however the officer from the Game Commission agreed it would be possible for them to set up a trap to attempt to trap the bear for relocation. He did not know if a relocation would “stick” as bears often return to their home territory.

If you have bird feeders it is a good idea to bring them inside, as they can attract wildlife. It is also a good idea to make sure garbage is secured and nothing is left out so that the bear(s) will not be attracted to the smell of food.

If you do see a bear, please use extreme caution. Again, the bear does not appear to be aggressive, but it is a wild animal.

More information can be found on the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s website.

And, here are a few articles about how to Avoid Attracting Bears and Living with Bears in Pennsylvania.

Once again, please exercise caution if you do see or encounter the bear.
