Several months ago, Mars Borough was approached by members of the former Dutilh United Methodist Church Mars Campus. Their small congregation was planning to no longer use the building they thought the Church might be willing to give the property to Mars Borough for use as a community center. Unfortunately, the United Methodist bylaws prevented this from happening, however Church officials stated they would like to see the property used to benefit the community and were hopeful Mars Borough would consider purchasing the property.

Given the magnitude of the property and the various buildings, Council felt it needed to weigh the options before making such a decision. Months went by and the Church officially went up for sale. Several Borough Council members suggested the Council consider putting in an offer. In early December, Council submitted a Letter of Intent to Church officials and it was accepted.

On January 7, 2019, at the regularly scheduled Borough Council Meeting, members of Mars Borough Council will accept public comment on the proposed purchase and possible short-term and long-term uses of the former Methodist Church on Pittsburgh Street. After public comments, Council will vote on purchasing the five pieces of property that comprise the former Dutilh United Methodist Church.
