On Monday, August 17, 2020 Mars Borough Council voted to extend the ban on open burning indefinitely. This decision came after Adams Area Fire Department encouraged all municipalities within its coverage area to label the ban as “indefinite.” At the meeting on Monday evening, Fire Chief Tim Llewellyn stated members of the public have seen end dates to previous bans, which were only good for two weeks, and did not check to see if a municipality had extended the ban. This led to at least one fire getting out of control due to dry conditions. The ban will be reviewed every two weeks by Mars Borough Council and if/when they deem it unnecessary the ban will be removed.
